Aubusson cartoons are hand drawn for
weavers to follow when weaving a handmade aubusson rug, tapestry or
cushion. Below is a photo of a cartoon for an aubusson rug.
From the aubusson cartoon work, you can see
that there are very small numbers on each area. They are color
numbers for weavers to identify and decide which yarns to use in which
area.:).
The cartoons are placed under the warp
threads. Weavers weave weft yarns on the warp constructions to form a
rug or tapestry or cushion.
Usually a 8x10 or 9x12 rug cartoon would
take at least 20 days for a designer to draw ready by hand. Each
flower, leaves and color numbers are drawn by hand and it makes handmade
aubusson furnishing items more valuable! It's amazing how
